*When the summertime comes, it means a couple of things in the Instagram world.
- More people will be taking filtered shots of their ice-cream cones and iced coffees, 2. Your feed is going to be infiltrated by shots of the water from the beach and cottage, and 3. Your favorite musicians will be on tour, and their Instagram is giving you a backstage pass to all the craziness.*
You can't begin without acknowledging the undisputed queen of pop right now - Ms. Taylor Swift. Swift has always been a major Instagram powerhouse. She understands how to use it as a marketing tool to promote her albums and epic star-filled music videos. But she also uses Instagram as a way to give her fans glimpses into her personal life: her epic 4th of July party last year, her December birthday where Jay and Bey were guests (nbd), and relaxing tea parties with supermodels. For The 1989 World Tour, Swift's been using it to connect with her fans in each city she visits, and give all of us access to the wonderful and weird backstage life of Swifty.
She's only been on tour for over a month and already she's had surprise guests like supermodel besties Martha Hunt and Gigi Hadid, her cat's namesake Mariska Hargitay (aka Olivia Benson), up-and-coming artists like Rachel Platten and Kelsea Ballerini. It's only June and there's no telling who Swift is going to pull on stage. And with backstage videos of Swift jamming with her guests and her cats staring at her angrily, it's going to be a good summer.
Drake's not on an official tour this summer, but you can count on Drizzy to share exclusive pictures of his onstage show, cute pics of fans at backstage meet and greets, and hilarious gifts from fans -- like the Jimmy Brooks necklace gifted to him at The Governors Ball (for non-Degrassi fans, Jimmy was the character he played on the beloved Canadian teen drama).
During his recent show in his hometown, Toronto, Drake played to a sold-out crowd and had a special visit from his favorite former teacher, which is probably the most adorable thing this sensitive rapper's done in, like, five minutes?
Drake's not the only hunk giving his fans a taste of the stadium life. The lads in One Direction may have suffered the loss of member Zayn Malik (don't worry, he's okay, he just left the band), but they're still playing shows around the world for their On The Road Again Tour. While the band's official Instagram is a great place for concert photos, the lads' personal Instas are the place for behind-the-scenes shots. 1D are known for their backstage pranks, including stealing golf carts and running away from security, so you're bound to see some antics that won't make the cut for their next documentary.
A surprising dark horse in the Insta-tour race, although we never should underestimated her, is Shania Twain. The country queen is back on tour after a long 11 year hiatus with her Rock This Country Tour. This is also Shania's last tour ever, which gives the whole event a sense of urgency and nostalgia, especially for those of us who grew up on "Any Man of Mine" and "That Don't Impress Me Much." Even though Twain's been out of the game for a while now, she knows how to use Instagram to excite her fans and give glimpses into her pre-show rehearsals. Instagram also indicates that Shanie flies via private jet. We wouldn't expect anything less from Canada's Country Queen.
Whatever genre of music you love or celeb who racks up the most followers, Instagram has become the easiest and most effective way for touring artists to promote their shows and give fans a backstage pass without them winning a silly radio contest or breaking the bank.
Let the summer of likes begin.
