Since its inception in '99, Coachella has been getting bigger and crazier with each passing year. That means the number of celebrities who attend has increased ten-fold – and they’re blowing up Instagram with crop tops, fringe and flower crowns. Let’s take a look at this year’s turnout and highlight some of the festival’s best.
Every April, music lovers, trend chasers, Ferris wheel enthusiasts, and an increasing barrage of celebrities descend upon the California desert to take in some of the best music, party at corporate-sponsored events, and get photographed in the latest festival fashion. Thanks to Instagram, celebs can take this fashion show into their own hands and give us a glimpse into their fabulous weekend.
This year was no different and during the festival’s first weekend, it was a host of reality-spawn turned models and Instagram stars that ruled the grounds. Kendall and Kylie Jenner showed up separately, but made the Kardashian brand known by traipsing around together and showcasing their ying and yang style.
Kylie arrived rocking mermaid aquamarine-colored hair, which isn’t a surprise since the girl changes her hair every day (update: she showed up the second weekend with a pink bob). She continued her transformation into baby Kim K by donning a monochromatic look of a cream crop top and skirt with a cream vest. She made it less Kim with more skin and a 90s hip-hop throwback of a baseball cap and work boots.
Kendall stuck with the Coachella standard 70s vibe that we’ve come to expect from models at this festival, showing off her svelte bod in a glorified bikini top and tan leather vest paired with distressed jean shorts. Of course, no Coachella look would be complete without a massive amount of accessories. Kendall wore chunky layered necklaces and a pair of stunner shades.
Kendall left her little sis to go party with Justin Bieber and fellow model Hailey Baldwin where they posed for Polaroids and played with Justin’s puppy – furthering the rumour that Kendall is the new Selena. Biebs stayed out of trouble and had fun, so we won’t hate on his Panama hat and basketball shorts.
Another sister duo that were everywhere the first weekend were Gigi and Bella Hadid, who separated at points to spend time with their own gangs (Gigi hung with her bf musician Cody Simpson and fellow models like Jourdan Dunn).
Gigi and Bella also have distinct opposing styles, with Gigi embracing the softer hippie aesthetic of Coachella in short shorts, a fringed vest, belly chains, and long flowing blonde locks. In contrast, Bella stuck with mostly black to match her chestnut hair, showing lots of skin in a black crochet dress, Adidas kicks, and minimal accessories (at least by Coachella standards).
Long-time Coachella devotee Katy Perry didn’t disappoint and came to party with bff Robert Pattinson and his newly-betrothed FKA Twigs. Perry never strays too far from her bubblegum cartoon style even when attending a festival that basically passes out belly chains at the entrance gates. Instead she opted for a beachy skirt and crop top coord, cat eye shades and hypnotic turquoise earrings.
Other celebs who were all over both Coachella weekends include Paris and Nicky Hilton, whose attention-seeking was epitomized by the annoying cat ear headband that Paris sported throughout the weekend. Modern Family star Sarah Hyland was everywhere the first weekend, hitting up the H&M party with Gigi Hadid and laying out on the grass in a pineapple tank with her girlfriends.
And, of course, no Coachella Instagram fashion round-up would be complete without mentioning Queen B. Yonce made a brief appearance (she had to split to get to her ma’s wedding) in a Saint Laurent fringe waistcoat and prairie dress valued at $8000.
